Merchant Marine Circulars
Please find attached copy of Merchant Marine Circular No. 275 recently issued by Panama Maritime Authority (PMA).
The purpose of this Circular is to inform about the new regulation applicable to the food and catering services according to Rule 3.2 of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006).
It is important to point out that shipowners must provide drinking water and suitable food supplies, free of charges, to all their seafarers during their period on board or contract period. Shiponwers shall ensure that adequate, varied and nutritious meals are prepared and served to seafarers in hygienic conditions, following International Medical Guide for Ships.
Shipowners shall ensure as well that seafarers hired as cooks on board are trained for that purpose and have the qualifications and competences required. The training course should be endorsed by PMA certifying him as a fully qualified cook and covering topics such as: practical cookery, food and personal hygienic, food storage, stock control, environmental protection and catering health and safety.
